How to flash a Compaq iPAQ in a different language [ex. german to english] GENERAL NEWS - Thursday, January 03, 2002 by Palpatime ( http://groups.google.com ) How to flash the english ROM to non-english iPAQs ? 1. Copy the entire contents from the CD. 2. Go into 'COMPAQ\Apps\RUU' and run install.exe. 3. After that do not run the further. Locate the unpacked files in your TEMP directory 'ex. C:\TEMP\PPC2002' There you will find a Tool named UpgradeUT.exe and a directory 'english'. Now make a copy of the directory and rename the copy to whatever language your iPAQ is running. Example: english -> german / english -> french 4. Start UpgradeUt.exe 5. Click on next until you can select the connection method [usb/serial] 6. Click next one more time - The Utility will now perform a CRC Check of the Package - 7. Now start any HEX-Editor [Hex Workshop for example [it has no limits in shareware]] 8. Load the rom image [NK_Mag21403WWE.nbf] in the renamed folder 9. change 'ENG' [The first Line in the File] to your iPAQs language [for example 'GER'] 10. Save the rom and exit the hex editor 11. Click next in the upgrader - Now the Upgrade Utillity will perform a Language Check but no CRC Check 12. Wait about 3 minutes for the updater to flash your iPAQ 13. DON'T press any button on the iPAQ or take it out of the cradle or whatever 14. Finished ? Then you own an english iPAQ now. If you want to flash it back to your own language anytime in the future, just switch the languages again any everything will be fine...
