Goodbye Plugfree - You Won't Be Missed...!

Yes - strike up the marching bands, let off the fireworks, uncork the celebration Champagne - Plugfree is being replaced!

Better still - the new Bluetooth solution providers for Fujitsu-Siemens' products will be... wait for it... Widcomm - who are as close to being an industry standard as you can get (the Tecom/Belkin dongles - among the most popular in the world - are Widcomm solutions)!

The Widcomm solution will replace Plugfree by September 2003 with the Widcomm-powered CONNECT2AIR dongle being released in that month.

What will this mean for the new Pocket Loox 610?

Instead of the Pocket PC version of Plugfree the new Loox 610 will have a new software solution - the CONNECT2AIR Bluetooth and Wireless Application Manager (as the CF-type GPRS solution also uses the CONNECT2AIR name this also raises the possibility that support for the GPRS card may be built-in...). It is safe to assume (though not confirmed) that this will be based on the Widcomm solution. The new Loox will NOT have Plugfree built-in in any form!

Interestingly the CONNECT2AIR software will be designed for one-handed use - presumably using the SpeedMenu buttons?

For the technically minded the new Bluetooth stack will cover all the major key profiles including GAP, SPP, DUN, FAX, GOEP (OBEX), OPP, FTP, SYNC, HSP (Headset profile), PAN, HID (for using Bluetooth keyboards and mice) and HCRP (a new one - Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile - a new printing profile). How many of these will find their way in to the new Loox stack is unknown but we can only hope that the HSP will be there and that the Loox 610 will be the first Pocket PC to include the HID profile.

As yet it is not known if the Windows Media 2003 upgrade for the Pocket Loox 600 will include Plugfree or the new CONNECT2AIR solution.

Further information about the Bluetooth capabilities of the Loox 610:

The new Loox 610 will be a Class 2 device (the Loox 600 is Class 1). The class refers to power output. Class 1 has a power output of 100mW which gives it a theoretical range of 100 metres. Any decent USB dongle will be a Class 1 device. Class 2 has the considerably lower power output of 2.5mW (less by a factor or 40!) - giving a theoretical range of 10 metres. In practice Class 1 is more likely to be restricted to c.40 metres and Class 2 devices can typically reach up to 20 metres for a lot less power!

A good place to see what this means in practice is this Brighthand thread which has some good explanations as to why it is the power of the dongle that matters when considering Bluetooth connection range...
